I am so often asked how to convert certain file formats. Therefore, I once decided to write posts from time to time about it.
In this first article is about how to convert files in AVI format to MP4. This is especially important if you have an iPod player and wants to call his own films are not just buying from the iTunes store, but in his own way and wants to watch movie.
In principle, conversion of AVI to MP4 are fairly simple, because the formats are very similar. However, the iPod is not as easy to deal with AVI files. To convert a file from AVI to MP4, I personally use the program iSquint. iSquint to convert your AVI file so that you can view your movie on your iPod. Exactly how it works, you can see here:
First iSquint start
Here you can make various settings. Basically, you can get your file can be optimized for the TV but that's never really necessary - at least for me and my PS3 does not :-)) So, we optimize time for iPod. Depending on the quality required, we can now change the settings. Normal is in the small iPod screen is definitely sufficient. Interestingly, when I bring out the setting "low" files smaller than "small", but why is this so, I kan not tell you. The professional options for the iPod is also completely unnecessary. What we can still consider the H.264 encoding, but again: For the small screen of the iPod here again not essential. So - we are ready to unkonvertieren AVI to MP4.
Second Integrate file and start
Now we move with the mouse, select a file AVI file directly into the iSquint window and start the program by clicking on "Start". Immediately begins to count iSquint. Depending on file size, file format and your computing power, this may take a few minutes up to an hour.
Third Completed file in iTunes, and enjoy integrated
Once the MP4 file is finished, you can copy it directly to your iPod via iTunes. The picture quality is really good for the iPod and the MP4 file, there are no problems.
The program you can download from Google and the term can easily find and iSquint, or you go through this link here. It's completely free. Have fun watching your movies and tv shows on your iPod.

Very nice explanation!
Unfortunately, like its big brother iSquint VisualHub no longer being developed ... the original, at least not by the programmer. But he has now released the source code, after which a new project called TranscoderRedux as open source at SourceForge ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/transcoderredux/ ) is formed, which hopefully will soon have a finished product.
For new versions would then be searched for TranscoderRedux, which then also likely to bring more features.
@ Norman: Thank you for pointing that out. I knew the project to date, not yet. I'll be looking at this project and also report if there is new talk about it. I think a good thing that the program will be developed further because it is really very useful ...
Hello,
for me it works, unfortunately, not on a brand new iMac. The following error message appears when I insert a DVD purchase: An error prevented the "NAME THE DVD" to start conversion. Usually that means that input file is truncated and / or corrupted. What do I do now?
Thanks for the help,
Greeting
Jürgen
The costs iSquint but what on the link?
@ Julian: Yes you're right. The provider of the download has probably secretly converted to pure paid downloads. I've updated the link above. There you can get the program for free.
Since siste cht cool. Now I can just watch movies on holiday on the ipod :)
